When you apply
If your au pair requires a Danish residence permit, you must complete the application form for au pairs from the Immigration Service. The form contains information about how to complete it and which documents to attach. The host family in Denmark begins the application process by completing their part of the application form (part 2 and 3) and forwarding it to the au pair applicant. The au pair applicant then completes his/her part of the form (part 1 and 2), attaches the required documents, and submits the final application.
Where to submit your application
The au pair applicant submits the application to a Danish Consulate General or Embassy in his/her country of origin. If the au pair applicant has been registered in another country than his/her country of origin for more than the past three months, the application can be submitted to a Danish diplomatic mission in that country or any another country. If the au pair applicant lives in the Philippines, the application can be forwarded to or handed in at the Norwegian Embassy in Manila.
If the application is submitted in Denmark
If the application is submitted when the au pair applicant is already in Denmark, the Immigration Service may refuse the application. The applicant will then have to return to his/her country of origin and apply from there. If the applicant is staying legally in Denmark at the time of application for a residence permit as an au pair, the applicant can remain in Denmark until the application has been processed by the Immigration Service. If the Immigration Service refuses the application, the applicant can appeal the decision to the Ministry of Refugee, Immigration and Integration Affairs. If the au pair applicant lives in Denmark, he/she may submit the application to the Service Centre of the Immigration Service or the local police station (if they live outside the Greater Copenhagen area).
Receiving a response to the application
The decision regarding the application is submitted to the Danish diplomatic mission where the au pair applicant applied. They will then mail it to the applicant or they will request that the applicant picks it up in person at the Danish diplomatic mission. If the application is submitted in Denmark, the decision will be sent to the applicant's address in Denmark, or to his/her attorney either by a message from the Police or by requesting that the applicant picks it up in person at the Service Centre of the Immigration Service. If the application has been rejected, the applicant will be told to leave Denmark before a specific date. In such cases, the applicant will be informed of the opportunities to appeal the decision.
