Au Pair Support

Good advice for au pairs

On arrival in Denmark:

  • Be smiling and accommodating when you meet your host family
  • If you suffer from jetlag and are tired for the first few days after you arrive, just say so
  • Be aware that the culture in Denmark is (probably) very different from your own and that you will need to adjust to their traditions, food and manners, for example.

If you come from another Danish family:

  • Explain to your host family the reason why you wanted to change family
  • Tell your new host family how long you have been in Denmark

Finances:

  • Ask your host family to transfer your allowance into your bank account – then both parties have documentation.
  • Make an agreement about holidays at the start of your contract (read more on the website of the National Directorate of Labour - Arbejdsdirektoratet)
  • Agree from the very beginning who pays for local travel, mobile phone bills and fees for your language school
  • Agree from the start how much you are allowed to use the family's telephone

Other topics:

  • If you are in doubt about anything, always ask your host family
  • If there are words or information you do not understand, ask the family to explain them to you in another way
  • Always be honest. Never try to conceal or hide anything if things did not go as promised or as the host family could reasonably expect.
  • If you break something by accident, tell your host family right away
  • If you feel homesick, are sad or afraid of something, discuss it with your host family
  • Ask your host family if you are allowed to have visitors stay overnight – and when
  • If you feel sick, tell your host family
  • Ask your host family to write down your working hours and chores in a table so that there are no misunderstandings
  • When the host family invites you to participate in family dinners and events, say thank you. It is a good way to become part of the family
